The X - ray stream - eclipsing polar RX J 1802 . 1 + 1804

چکیده
We present X-ray and optical data of the newly discovered AM Her variable RX J1802.1+1804. This X-ray source was observed in the ROSAT All-Sky-Survey in September 1990 and subsequently discovered as a highly variable and soft X-ray source. Follow-up pointed observations confirmed the strong variability and revealed a periodic flux modulation including a sharp and nearly complete eclipse of the X-ray emission. Based on the shape and duration of this eclipse as well as the lack of optical eclipses we favour an interpretation in terms of a self-eclipse by the accretion stream. The X-ray spectrum averaged over the full period is dominated by soft emission below 0.5 keV. The ratio of soft (blackbody) to hard (bremsstrahlung) bolometric energy flux is 1670, distinguishing this object as another example of a polar with an extreme strong excess in soft X-rays.

ASCA observation of the polar RX J 1802 . 1 + 1804
We present X-ray data of RX J1802.1+1804 obtained by ASCA. Although it shows a clear orbital intensity modulation with an amplitude of nearly 100% below 0.5 keV in ROSAT data, the ASCA light curves are nearly flat except for a possible dip lasting about one-tenth of the orbital period. We discuss this within the model assumption of a stream-eclipsing geometry as derived from the ROSAT observati...
متن کاملRX J 0719 . 2 + 6557 : a new eclipsing polar
A newmagnetic cataclysmic variable is identified as the counterpart of the X-ray source RX J0719.2+6557 which has been discovered during the ROSAT all-sky survey. Optical spectroscopy of the ≈ 17m object revealed a pattern of Balmer and strongHe II emission lineswhich are characteristic for cataclysmic variables. The emission lines show radial velocity variations with a period of 98.2 min with ...
متن کاملSpectroscopic observations of the eclipsing Polar MN Hya ( RX J 0929 – 24 )
We present low–medium resolution optical spectroscopy of the eclipsing AM Her system MN Hya (RX J0929–24). We determine the magnetic field strength at the primary accretion region of the white dwarf to be 42MG from the spacing of cyclotron features visible during φ ∼0.4–0.7. From spectra taken during the eclipse we find that the secondary has a M3–4 spectral type. Combined with the eclipse phot...
متن کاملSystem parameters of the long-period polar V1309 Ori
Based on high-resolution optical spectroscopy in the blue and the near infra-red spectral range, we derived velocity images (Doppler tomograms) of the mass-donating secondary star and the accretion stream of the long-period eclipsing polar V1309 Ori (RX J0515.41+0104.6). Combined with HST-spectroscopy of high time resolution and optical photometry we were able to derive the main system paramete...
متن کاملXMM - Newton observations of the polars EV UMa , RX J 1002 - 19 and RX J 1007 - 20 ?
We present XMM-Newton data of three strongly magnetic cataclysmic variables (polars) EV UMa, RX J1002-19 and RX J1007-20. These include the polar with the shortest orbital period (EV UMa) and the polar with one of the highest magnetic field strengths (RX J1007–20). They exhibit a range of X-ray spectral characteristics which are consistent with their known magnetic field strength. We find that ...
